Citation building in Newmarket that fixes the record before it adds to it.

Your name, address and phone number are sitting on dozens of sites you have never logged into. We find every version, decide which one is true, correct the rest, and build the listings that carry weight for a Newmarket or Aurora business. Quality over count, monitored quarterly.

What we find in Newmarket citation audits

Six versions of the truth, and none of them agree.

These are the patterns we open an audit and find, from Aurora Village to Holland Landing, and what each one takes to put right.

“We moved from Main Street to Harry Walker Parkway and the old address is still everywhere.”

The fix. A move is the single biggest source of citation damage, because directories keep what they were given and nobody tells them otherwise. We list every place the old address appears, claim or contact each one, and push the correct record through the aggregators first so the downstream sites update themselves. Then we check the website footer, the schema, the invoices and the email signature, because those feed the next generation of listings.

“There are two listings for us on Yelp and I never made either of them.”

The fix. Duplicates come from suppliers, franchise systems, scraped data and customers adding a business themselves. Two live listings split your reviews and your signal between them. We identify which record has the strongest history, claim it, then merge or remove the others through each platform's own process, which is paperwork rather than magic. The result is one profile per location carrying everything, instead of two carrying half each.

“Our name is listed four different ways: with Inc, without, with Newmarket in it, and with a service in it.”

The fix. Google reads the business name as an identifier, so four spellings read as uncertainty, and a name padded with a city or a service is against the rules and can draw a suspension. We set one canonical name, the one on your registration and your signage, and push it through every listing. The Newmarket and the service belong in the category, the service list and the description, where they are allowed to do their work.

“An agency sold us two hundred directory submissions a few years back.”

The fix. Volume packages leave a trail of thin listings on sites with no traffic and no editorial standard, sometimes with a phone number or address that was wrong from the start. We audit what is out there, keep the ones on directories a Newmarket customer might actually use, correct the salvageable, and leave the junk to age out rather than chasing removals that do nothing. Then we rebuild properly on the tier one platforms that were skipped.

“We have locations in Newmarket and Aurora and Google keeps mixing them up.”

The fix. Multi location businesses need a separate citation set per location, each with its own address, phone number and landing page on the site, and each linked to its own Business Profile. When both locations point at one homepage and share a phone number, the platforms merge them in ways you cannot control. We split the records, build a page per location, and keep the service areas from overlapping more than they truthfully do.

“We changed our phone number to a tracked line and now I am not sure what is where.”

The fix. Tracking numbers are useful and they are also a common way to break a citation profile, because the tracked line goes on the ads and the website while the old number stays on forty listings. We pick one number as the canonical citation number, usually the main business line, keep the tracked line for campaigns where it can be attributed properly, and make the change once across every listing rather than piecemeal.

What we actually do

The citation work behind a Newmarket engagement.

Nine pieces of work, all of it evidenced in the ledger, all of it yours to keep.

Full citation audit

Every listing we can find for your business name, address, phone and website across the aggregators, the major platforms and your category directories, with the discrepancies listed one by one in the ledger.

Canonical record

One agreed name, address, phone number, website and hours, taken from your registration and your Business Profile, written down as the single version every listing gets corrected to from that point on.

Tier one build

Google Business Profile, Apple, Bing, Yelp, Yellow Pages Canada, Canada411, Facebook and Foursquare claimed or corrected first, because the smaller directories pull their data from these.

Duplicate resolution

Duplicate and auto generated profiles identified, the strongest record kept, the rest merged or removed through each platform's process, with the documentation each one demands.

Category directories

The directories that matter for your trade in Newmarket, HomeStars and TrustedPros for trades, BBB, RateMDs for clinics, TripAdvisor for Main Street restaurants, association and licensing listings for regulated work.

Profile completion

Not just the name and address. Categories, service lists, hours, payment methods, photos, description and a link to the right page on your site, because a half filled listing is a weak citation.

Website and schema alignment

The address in your footer, your contact page and your LocalBusiness schema matched to the canonical record, because the site is the source Google checks the directories against.

Multi location handling

A separate citation set, landing page and Business Profile for each location if you run more than one across Newmarket, Aurora or Richmond Hill, so the records stay distinct instead of merging.

Quarterly monitoring

A recheck every 90 days for new duplicates, scraped listings and data that has drifted back, because directories resurrect old records on their own schedule and nobody tells you when they do.

Recommended first 90 days

What we fix before we build

First we find the holes. Then we fill them.

Most of what is costing you calls is already on your site. We audit what exists before we add anything, and we verify a restorable backup before we touch a thing.

Broken links and 4xx errorsDead pages and dead ends, found by a rendered crawl, fixed and rechecked with a second crawl.
Missing or duplicate H1s and metadataEvery page gets one title, one H1 and one job. No two pages competing for the same search.
Redirect chains and indexing alertsCanonical, redirect and coverage alerts in Search Console resolved, not left sitting in the inbox.
Orphaned pagesPages with zero internal links get linked into the site or retired with a redirect.
Pages that are no longer trueArticles describing services you stopped offering are corrected or removed before they generate the wrong calls.
Backups, plugins, DNS and emailBackups that quietly stopped running, overlapping plugins, and the DNS and email records that decide whether your quotes land in inboxes.

We read it properly.

Your website, your Google Business Profile and the competitors in Newmarket and Aurora, before we reply. If we are not the right fit for your market or your stage, we say so and point you somewhere better.

02Week one

A 30-minute fit call.

What is costing you calls today, what we would fix first, what we would build after that, and what it costs. Straight numbers, no slide deck.

03Week two

A one-page scope, then access and a backup.

What we fix, what we build, what we report each month, and the monthly figure. Website admin, Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics access, then a backup taken and verified before anything is touched.

04Month one on

Cleanup, build, report.

The site stops leaking calls first. Then the service and town pages, the profile rhythm and the schema. Every month: baseline, work completed, what moved in search, what it did for the business, next action.

Questions from Newmarket citation building

Asked on most fit calls.

If yours is not here, the direct line is (647) 717-7785, and the answer comes from the person who would do the work. You might also want to read how we work.

What is a citation and why does my Newmarket business need them?

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website, whether you put it there or not. Google uses them as corroboration: if a dozen independent sources agree that your company is at a given address in Newmarket with a given phone number, that is evidence you are real and local. If they disagree, Google has to guess, and guessing costs you position in the Maps pack. Citations are not a growth lever on their own. They are the foundation that the Business Profile and the service pages stand on, which is why we do them early.

How many citations does a business in Newmarket actually need?

Usually 30 to 60 well built ones, not the hundreds that volume packages promise. What matters is that the tier one sources agree, that the directories relevant to your category are covered, and that each listing is complete rather than a bare name and number. A plumber in Newmarket needs HomeStars and TrustedPros far more than a general directory nobody visits. A clinic near Southlake needs RateMDs. Past that point each additional listing adds very little, and thin listings on low quality sites can do harm. We aim the effort where the signal is.

Is cleaning up old listings really more valuable than building new ones?

In our experience with Newmarket and Aurora businesses, yes, and it is not close. Almost every established company we audit has an old address, a dead phone number or a duplicate profile sitting on sites they forgot about. Those are active contradictions in the record. A new listing adds one quiet vote; removing a contradiction fixes the confusion that was holding the whole profile back. We audit before we build for that reason, and the ledger shows you exactly what was wrong and what it was changed to.

We have two locations, one in Newmarket and one in Aurora. How does that work?

Each location gets its own record: its own address, its own phone number, its own Business Profile and its own page on the website for the citations to point at. Sharing a phone number or pointing both listings at the homepage is what causes platforms to merge them or show the wrong one. We keep the service areas honest as well, because two profiles claiming the same towns compete with each other. The extra work is in the build, not the month, so it does not change the engagement figure.

How long before citation work shows up in Newmarket search results?

Nobody can promise a ranking by a date, and we do not. Citations are slower than profile work because each directory updates on its own schedule and the aggregators push data downstream over weeks. Google Business Profile work can move within weeks, which is why it goes first. On the businesses in our case studies the first movement in search showed inside the first 90 days, and the compounding came in months four to twelve. Citation work is part of what makes that compounding hold rather than something you see on its own the week it is done.

Do you buy links or paid directory placements?

No. Citations are directory listings, which are a different thing from bought backlinks, and we build the listings that a real Newmarket customer might plausibly use. We do not buy links, we do not buy badges, and we do not use private networks. Links that count are earned through the pages and the articles we publish and through the associations and suppliers you already have a relationship with. If an agency is selling a link package, ask them which sites and then look at those sites. That answers it faster than any argument we could make.

Selective partnerships, meaningful results

If the ambition is serious, let's talk.

We review every inquiry personally and accept only the partnerships where we believe we can create a meaningful advantage in Newmarket, Aurora and York Region.
